How to Organize Your Garage

Sometimes it’s tough to throw things away. Whether it’s junk accumulated over the years, or sentimental items you can’t seem to toss, garages seem to be where it all winds up. Going through piles, and sometimes stacks, of things can be time consuming - but necessary.

If you want to fit your car in your garage, you may just need to set aside a day to clear enough room. With enough time and a few tips, we can help you reclaim your garage.

Visualize to Organize

Take a look at your garage, and imagine the way you would like it to look. Try to see past the any clutter or inefficient layout problem, and just see the space itself. Visualize what you want your garage to look like, and how you want it to function.

Then, take a full mental account of the sheer amount of stuff you need to go through to make your vision a reality. Try not to be overwhelmed, and if you need to you can just do one section at a time.

The Sorting Process

This part of the job requires a fair number of boxes. Start off by separating them into sections of your garage, and label them any way you see fit. There are many methods to sorting, like setting aside items for “storage” or even “heirlooms” - but most people appreciate the simplicity of the “Keep” and “Toss” system.

Any time you can reduce the amount of thought involved into every object, the faster the whole process will go. With “Keep” and “Toss”, you can power through pretty quickly. With anything left, you can put into “Miscellaneous” boxes and take your time later.

When in Doubt, Throw It Out

The general rule of thumb here is that if you haven’t used it in one year, then it needs to go. That’s the best way to eliminate clutter that’s overtaking your garage. You can have a yard sale, or donate the items, or offer them to family as hand-me-downs. Ultimately, if you’re not accessing these items on a regular basis, they aren’t serving you well.

Increase Your Storage

Sometimes you just need an upgrade. If you’ve sorted everything and are down to what you feel is the bare essentials, and still don’t have enough space in your garage, then you may need to find another storage solution.
